At a recent meeting, James Ras- mussen brought an Indian wooden paddle that was given to him when he was young, a custom of the tribe, so they could paddle their canoes, which were hollowed out by hand and primitive tools. The paddle is beautifully made. Chairperson of the Duwamish Tribe, Cecile Hansen, a dynamic person, at one time laid down in front of a bulldozer that was clear- ing some land (Duwamish Indian territory) and refused to move, thereby saving an area of known Duwamish Indian artifacts. The Duwamish Indian Tribe has many friends and supporters and they have done so much for Seattle. The Duwamish Indian Tribe is working with the Port of Seattle and the City Parks Department to obtain 7.25 acres to create a Duwamish Cultural Center and Museum.
