Check out the schedule below for upcoming activities. Please feel free to e-mail or call me with any questions related to enrichment activities or community services. I will do my best to connect your student with an activity at school or in the community that matches their interests and goals. My office is in room 123D in the Library and I am at school full-time, so students can stop by at lunch, on breaks, or after school. Here is the fall semester schedule of activities. A few activities are still in development. All activities begin the week of Oct. 4th, unless otherwise noted. HEALTH AND WELL-BEING Street Yoga: Yoga is a physical activity that everyone can do. Yoga can help you to feel more at ease in your body, decrease stress, and help you to deal more effectively with your emotions. Tuesdays, Room 133, 2:45-3:45 p.m. Freestyle Cooking with Roberto Ascalon: Do you like to eat? Do you like to cook? Learn how to improvise and make healthy choices with food. Tuesdays, Room 149, 2:45-5:30 p.m. 6-week series, Nov. 9th-Dec. 14th, only 14 spots available! ART AND TECHNOLOGY Digital Photography: Do you like to take pictures? Do you want to become a better photographer? Work with Bryan Gordon of the Metrocenter YMCA. Tuesdays, room 131, 2:45-4:15 p.m.; 1st session: September 28th! Music Production with Daniel Pak: Want to make beats, write songs, and learn about music of all kinds? In this Arts Corps music production class, you will learn the skills required to produce music. Wednesdays, Room 131, 2:45-4:15 p.m. 1st day: Oct. 13th Robotics w/ Peter & Ms. Huong: Do you want to build or program a robot? See how your math and science skills apply to real-world situations and jobs. Wednesdays, Room 202, 2:45-4:15 p.m. Art Club: Do you like to make art in your spare time? Do you wish there were more art electives? This is the club for you! Club will likely begin meeting in mid-October. LUNCHTIME Game Center: Do you want to hang out with your friends and play board games or cards at Lunch? Stop by room 123D in the Library to hang out, eat snacks, and play games. No commitment necessary. Chess Challenge: Improve your chess skills by playing your peers or challenging Charlie at Lunch on Tuesdays and Thursdays in the Commons. This is a drop-in activity—just show up if you want to play! LEADERSHIP AND SERVICE Service Connections: Community service can be an opportunity to build your resume, get job skills, and explore interests. Check out the display case outside the Y office or see Anne Powell for ideas and connections. Latino Club: This club will be evolving into a leadership-building and college-bound club this year. We are building a close connection with the UW and WSHS upperclassmen. Meeting days to be determined. Earth Service Corps: Do you want to speak your mind about environmental issues and bring about change in our community? Join this club to earn service hours and have an impact! Current projects include a school waste assessment and garden project. Tuesdays and Thursdays, Lunch, Room 231 as well as monthly after-school and Saturday service projects. Financial Literacy Workshops: Want to know how to make money and manage it wisely? Seattle University students will facilitate this five-week workshop series. Dates to be determined. West Seattle Bridges: Do you want to earn service hours and help kids at the same time? Volunteer at West Seattle Elementary. Sign up at any time and commit to 1-2 days per week. Listen to the school bulletin, look at the bulletin board next to the Teen Health Center, and check with Ms. Powell for activities. More activities will start in February, including Strong Teens, Business Club with Seattle U., Poetry, Video Production, Healthy Kids Day, and more! Multiple YMCA Service Learning Opportunities The YMCA offers a diverse array of volunteer opportunities. See Anne Powell in room 123D in the Library or e-mail her at ampowell@seattleschools.org for more information. · West Seattle Bridges: Volunteers are needed starting immediately to support kids after school at the YMCA program at West Seattle Elementary School. Have fun working with kids and earn service hours at the same time! · YESC: Join the YMCA Earth Service Corps and improve your environment! Are you passionate about being GREEN? Become a member of the team. See Anne Powell or Ms. Tullius in room 231. · Do you like sports? Become an assistant coach or ref for a youth sports program such as basketball or baseball. · Are you interested in joining the YMCA gym? Get to know your way around by becoming a volunteer with Kids' Gym at the YMCA and play with the kids while their parents work out! · Madison Mentoring Project: Do you want to help teens prepare for high school? Be a role model for younger students at Madison Middle School. We encourage our readers to comment. No registration is required.
