The new grocery store is being built at 4201 S.W. Morgan St., on the same property where the old Thriftway store stood before it burned down in a three-alarm fire last March. While customers entered the old store from the north, the main entrance to the new store faces west. At 32,000 square feet, it's more than twice as big as its prede- cessor and is scheduled for comple- tion near the end of February, said Debra Montgomery, store manager. The new store was designed by Curtis Beattie and Associates Architects. J. R. Abbott Construc- tion Co. Inc. is building it. "We're going to have everything we did have before and more," Montgomery said. More includes an expanded floral section to welcome customers at the front door. There will be a delicatessen with hot soups and indoor seating for 30 people. Look for a soda fountain as well as a bakery and an espresso bar in the new store. A nutrition center will have an expanded selection of natural foods, organic produce, vitamins and dietary supplements. Customers ! The housewares section will be bigger and so will the wine section. There will be bulk offerings of spices, teas, pasta and candy. Washington Mutual Bank will open a small in-store branch in the new Thriftway too. THE SIDEWALK along Mor- gan Street is being replaced. (206) 243-0300 will be two large windows installed on that side of the store, one o~ which will be a display window. Before the foundation was poured, the site was excavated so that the rear of the new store is 12 feet lower than the elevation of the old parking lot. That eliminated the slope of the old parking lot. The new parking lot is somewhat smaller than before. It will have 92 parking stalls as compared to 110 at the old store. Other details of the new store are still being worked out, Montgomery said. Until the wiring and plumbing are installed, there's still freedom to fine-tune the store's design, Mont- gomery said. Cap Food Ser- vices, whose presi- dent, Paul Kapioski owns the West Seat- tle Thriftway, is assembling a focus group comprised of people who live near Morgan Junction ~o suggest other ideas tbr the new store. It will offer free coffee to customers, just like the old store did. And the new store will have many of the same employees who used to work at the old Morgan Junction store. "Look for a lot of familiar faces," Montgomery said. She called the staff at the old store "the best crew we ever had." Cap Foad Services helped the employees find other jobs after the fire.
