| 8 Wednesday, September 10, 1997 West Seattle Herald/White Center News at Jeff Ursino is replacing Pat Jew- ell as the West Seattle High Ath- letic Director this year. Jewell will be devoting her time to her role as activities coordina- tor. She held both jobs last year. Ursino, 33, has been teaching chemistry at the school since 1989 and has been an assistant football coach since 1993. "I wanted to do this because it's different from teaching," Ursino said. "It's interesting and exciting to be involved with a different part of students' lives. "I'm also doing this because I know it's an opportunity to serve the school and the kids. That's why anyone gets into teaching," he added. The school approached Ursino after expansions in the activities program required Jewell's jobs be divided. Though he plans to try and maintain the status quo until he gets the hang of things, Ursino said his first goal is maximizing participation. He began his new duties last week, the toughest time of the year for an athletic director. He spent his first week divided between confirming schedules and dealing with student-eligibility questions. "It's been what I expected, which was to be swamped. I've spent five days in which all the minutes have been consumed by this job," Ursino said. The key for West Seattle will be how quickly the players learn to play with each other. "Watching our first full intra-squad scrimmage has given me reason to be optimistic," Tracy said.
