(i Friday, August , 201:1' WEst S'atlb'l-][bald' Amazing Grace By Georgie Bdght Kunkel Taking time to retreat with friends is like polishing a sil- ver bracelet. If that bracelet is tarnished and lying on a yard sale table of trinkets it remains unnoticed--like a human being that has lost the luster of life. The marvel of a human can only remain marvelous if it is fed, watered and replenished from time to time. When dis- covered for what it truly is--the potential for being polished and helped to come alive--a human being can once more burst into the shiny silver essence that is life. Some people are like unpol- ished silver. They remain hidden from sight and are not sought after. It takes nourishment of the soul to be a sparkling pres- ence. It doesn't take much to bring out the shiny essence of one's being. Sometimes it can happen when one chooses to go On retreat with friends. That retreat experience was offered to me recently. Fortunately, I accepted the challenge of trav- eling to a rural retreat center on a hillside where my cell phone didn't get a signal and I had no need to watch televi- sion or check my email. Meals were served without having to shop, cook or do dishes. With time available we all indulged in physical and spiritual activi- ties presented by expert gurus. There was also time to express ourselves by creating collages that represented our inner spirit. Some of the people who attended were church acquain- tances and others were new to me. I embraced this opportunity to sign up for Karaoke and the talent show and was welcomed at the Sunday morning service as I sang-Amazing Grace. I chose to sing it unaccompanied since there is nothing so emo- tionally fulfilling as singing with no instrument to detract from the strong lyrics. This song triggered some deep feel- ings within me, harking back to a time when my widowed mother rocked me to sleep every night. She revealed later that the first year of my life she cried at least once every day. That explained the reason that I was always drawn to the minor music of the early composers. I encouraged the audience to sing along and the sorrow that usu- ally welled up in me when sing- ing this hymn disappeared and I felt a sense of connection. Today I received an email from a young woman turnifig fifty who had become one of my two roommates. She said she loved getting acquainted with me. Even though I am an on-stage person and she says she is more introverted, she felt we were kindred spirits. Our shared roommate who also came for the first time was the star of Karaoke and the talent show with her deeply emotional rendition of several memora- ble songs from past years. She made me aware after our first night that I snored and she had brought earplugs along just in case of such an occurrence. I had always wondered what was waking me up at night other than the need for a bathroom break. Along with this new knowledge I have gained some new friends and have learned to survive in housing without a telephone, room service, or a swimming pool. Believe me the simple life is refreshing when shared with caring people who, no matter what age, are willing to offer a peek into their own lives and listen to your story as well. If you are willing to risk sharing your soul with others, you will be like the polished silver, attracting others to share your life. It has worked for me.
